When using mono lights and depending on the brand, they will fire when there is no PC cord plugged into them and the Photocell sees the main light flash. On my White Lightning if a PC cord is plugged into them the Photocell is deactivated. Since the technique requires one flash exposure with no diffusion and another flash exposure with diffusion, you need to fire them separately.
