Why is Flash so Important to Photography?

When you photograph, do you get perfect light every single time? If you say yes, then I am going out and taking photographs with you.

More likely, you get perfect light sometimes and other times not so much and it shows in your photos. It matters not whether you are photographing an indoor portrait or wildflowers in the mountains, if the existing light isn’t working for the subject, your photos could fail and that does not build your confidence as a photographer.

Years ago, my wife and I vacationed in Hawaii and this vacation snapshot shows you the problem. There was a beautiful sunset, and I asked my wife to pose and I got the picture on the left. It’s too high in contrast and she is very dark and that makes it a ‘throwaway’ photo. So, I turned on my flash and got a perfect vacation snapshot.

If this is you, then I know exactly how you feel! You can see it happened to me and it’s the reason why I want to tell you why Flash is so important to your photography and why you need to consider using one. Look at these photos, all using flash indoors and outdoors.

The top left photo is using flash for light painting. The middle top used flash to ‘freeze’ the moving mountain biker in place. The top-right shows using multiple flashes to light a kitchen for real estate photography. The lower left uses flash to add highlights to wildflowers. The second from the left, lower row, shows a businessman lit with several flashes in front of his business while the high-key portrait of the woman used multiple flashes for a studio portrait. And the lower right used a flash to light the tent for this outdoor-adventure camp scene.

Obviously, there are endless uses for flash in photography, no matter what you photograph.

Let me tell you about my friend, who told me she has a flash, and every time she tries to use her flash, she gets lost and ends up putting it away.

Is that where you are? If so, I feel your pain and have said to many of my subscribers that today’s flash units are so sophisticated and possibly more sophisticated than the camera they also own.

But it does not have to be so confusing and frustrating. There are so many flashes out there, some very expensive and others under $100 and both can DO THE SAME THING! Add valuable light to your subjects.

So, what if I told you I can take you from a newbie on flash to a master in a few videos? Well, I can! Three of our current courses include in-depth videos to show you how to master flash. The first is our dedicated course: Mastering Flash Photography. The second is  The Art of Professional Photography where flash fundamentals are included as well as demonstrations on photography portraits, outdoor adventures, and more using flash.

The other course is using Wireless Speedlights for Nature and Adventure Photography where the emphasis is on subjects that Nature and Outdoor photographers specialize in.
