Using the flash, step by step
Now that we have covered all the details of flash and how it works, here is the step by step approach for simple flash photography.
1) The flash attaches to the hot shoe.
2) Turn on the power
3) Set the flash to ETTL/ITTL. It will output the correct amount of light for proper flash exposure.
4) Set your shooting mode to Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, or Manual. Use Program for indoor party photos, use Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority for outdoor photos where you want the background in the photo. (I rarely use Shutter Priority with flash because I get the results I want easier with Manual or Av) You can also use Manual, just make sure that you set the f/stop and shutter speed correctly based on the cameras meter suggestions.
