This works the same for the center weighted systems, if you point the camera at a scene with the subject placed on the side of the frame, the flash and camera will meter the center of the frame rather than the subject and this could result in an inaccurate exposure. By using FEL you can lock in the metered settings prior to moving the camera and your auto focus flash output will remain the same. Not all cameras have FEL so be sure and check your manual to see if your camera does. For those systems that do use the selected AF point there can be problems.
