Some landscape and nature photographers still shoot with a large format 4×5 view camera.  This will give you a spectacular 4 inch by 5 inch film image.  You can also do the same with a 6cm x 7cm SLR camera, and even a 6 x 4.5, but you won’t have those wonderful swings and tilts to change perspective and focus like the 4×5 has.  (There are some medium format cameras that have models with the ability for tilting the lens board, but you can also get a perspective control lens for your 35mm.) Keep in mind you need a superb scanner to digitize those various film formats. Instead, why not use a 4×5 with a digital back or the latest Hassleblad digital camera? These will cost a lot of money but if the photographer desires these large formats that is the way to go.

Like I said, “some photographers” prefer to shoot this way, but WHY? Today’s digital cameras are amazing. In addition, look at the end use of the image these days. I was published by several calendar companies that would only except 4×5 inch transparencies. NO 35MM was their rules. Today they accept digital files from the highest resolution cameras. But really, think first about where the images will be used, or even more, look at how much print is being done. Your image will most likely be used on the web in many cases. Calendars and magazines will obviously want good enough resolution, but the need for a 4×5 digital file is rare in my opinion.
